Ecchi is the Japanese version of ’soft porn’ which technically makes it hentai manga. The word ecchi is derived from how the Japanese pronounce the letter ‘H’. While hentai means ’sexually perverse or perverted in Japanese, the ecchi hentai stories are usually humorous in tone and tend to have cute characters and the mildest of sexual scenes. While mangas (cartoons) have been on the Japanese scene since the late 1940’s (a style heavily influenced by western animators such as Walt Disney), ecchi is a relatively recent adaption. While most Japanese manga (cartoons) can have storylines that are very intense (violence or sexually), ecchi is a milder form or hentai (manga that have sex or sexual situations) that is very popular with adolescents and pre-teens. While many of the manga storylines have become mainstream stories, such as Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon, none have skyrocketed as fast as the stories about a pre-teen ninja want to be called Naruto. Sakura is a female character in the Nartuo series.
The best way to describe Sakura ecchi would be ‘pin-up girl’. Sakura could refer either to Sakura Haruno, a character in the manga and anime series Naruto, or to a series of images of adolescent girls called Sakura. Read the rest of this entry »

In the Japanese culture their comics are called manga and are an art form that has been around since the late 1940’s. Heavily influenced by American animator Walt Disney, manga characters all tend to have large western eyes and button noses. Many of the hair styles are inclined to be extreme with male characters have outrageously spiked hair and females tend to have either huge pompadour styles, extremely short spiked or impossibly long hairdos. When the subject matter of a manga revolves around sex and sexual situations they are referred to as Hentai (in Japanese this means ’sexually perverted’). Read the rest of this entry »

In Japanese culture there are two words for themes involving homosexual love. Yaoi is the Japanese term for male homosexuality based stories while Yuri is for female. Actually, Yuri is Japanese jargon referring to love between women (or ‘girls love’) in the manga, hentai, and anime medium. While Yuri has its roots in Japanese literal culture dating back to the early twentieth century with works such as Yaneuro no Nishojo by Nobuko Yoshiva, it was in the late 1970 that these themes translated over into the manga art form. In the 1990 with the aid of dojinshi (independent) producers Yuri themed mangas began to appear in greater numbers creating a greater acceptance of this type of content within the manga culture. In the early 1990 the Saturday morning cartoon time slot in the United States was in a rut. Because of the spiraling cost of producing animated series (even when the animation was created abroad) the homegrown cartoons were reverting to remakes of older cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry. Producers were looking for a new source of cartoon animation and looked to Japan for new input. Soon anime series that were already popular in Japan such as Voltron and Battleship Yamoto were making appearances on western television. By 1995 the stage was set for an anime series based on a series of role-playing video games for the Nintendo Read the rest of this entry »

The best western definition of ecchi hentai or anime would be the title ’soft porn’. Ecchi is a result of how the Japanese pronounce the ‘H’ sound which is the first letter in the word hentai. Hentai is a form of Japanese mangas (cartoons) where the subject is sexual in nature. While standard Hentai might be considered rather extreme, ecchi is usually associated with love stores centering on teenage and adolescent love. Ecchi stories tend to revolve more around humorous situations and stories, rather than out and out pornographic images. Stories such as Ranma 1/2 and Love Hina are examples of this type of hentai. When the Japanese comic (they are called mangas in Japan) industry began in the late 1940’s the artists drew upon the western animators such as Walt Disney in determining what their characters would look like. Rather than emphasizing the Japanese cultural and racial look, the anime and manga artists drew their characters with round western style eyes and light skin. Manga storylines cover the whole spectrum of subject matter; everything from fantasy and science fiction, to humorous love stories and business related stories. Read the rest of this entry »

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format and was created in the 1980’s by CompuServe to show images online. While this format is somewhat inappropriate for the 24 bit photo images of today, it is still a universal format ideal for the use on the internet. Gif photo files have the ‘.gif’ extension at the end of the file name.
Ecchi (the Japanese version of ’soft core’ porn) gifs can be found all over the internet and on various websites that cater this form of hentai. Ecchi gifs are popular as identity images for members on bulletin boards, blogs and forums because they can usually pass the censorship rules of the various websites. Read the rest of this entry »

The Japanese ’soft porn’ or ecchi category of manga has grown tremendously over the past several years. While the use of the word ecchi as a euphuism meaning naughty originated in the early 19th century (in a Japanese girls high school), it became popular in the early 1950’s when it was used in a popular novel of the time. In Japan when the word is used as a noun, it means the sexual act itself but when used as an adjective it translates as ‘lewd’ or ’sexy’. Ecchi galleries contain a series of mildly risqu? images of various well known characters and anime series. Ecchi galleries can vary in both topic and size, everything from a few images stored as .gif files to hundreds of both photographs and video available for download. Read the rest of this entry »
